How to Follow the Score
Two sections of the bell-ringers’ performance are scored. The score is available as a website which comes pre-loaded with two different JSON files.
In the first scored performance, at 6:30 PM, the file fast_to_slow.json should be loaded.
In the second, at 7:30 PM, the slow_to_fast.json file should be loaded.
The score is available here: https://singinghollow.sebastianadams.net/bell_conductor.html
The purpose of the score is to provide a controlled speeding up or slowing down of the bells. Rather than relying on memorisation/change calling to tell you when to ring the bell, the score will do so.
The score is essentially playing a modified version of Plain Hunt.
When your color and bell number appear on the screen, ring your bell.
Immediately after ringing, attempt to stand your bell.
Don't worry if you aren't able to stand the bell perfectly or immediately. This striving, and even failure, is an intentional part of the piece's effect. Simply keep attempting to stand the bell until you manage it.
Bell Colors & Your Bell Number
Each bell (and ringer) is assigned a specific color:
- 1: Green
- 2: Blue
- 3: Yellow
- 4: Pink
- 5: Dark Purple
- 6: Red
On-Screen Elements Explained:
-
The large, full-screen display is your primary cue for when to ring your bell. When the screen flashes your bell's assigned color and displays your bell's number in large numerals, this is your signal to ring your bell. The flash and number will appear for exactly one second. Aim to ring your bell so it sounds during this one-second window.
-
The Countdown (Top Center):
"Countdown: XX.XXs": This number, located at the top center of the screen, shows you the time remaining in seconds until the next bell is due to ring. Use this to anticipate your upcoming rings and prepare.
-
Next Bell Indicator (Center):
"Next Bell: [Colored Square with Number]": Directly below the countdown, you'll see a label indicating "Next Bell," followed by a small square. This square will show the color and number of the bell that is next in the sequence. This helps you confirm who is ringing after you, or when your next turn is coming up.
-
Current Row & Method Display (Top Right):
"Current Row: [Number]": This displays the current row number you are performing. This helps you track your progress through the method.
"Row: [Bell Sequence]": Directly below the current row number, this shows the full sequence of bells for the current row in the method. For example, if it says "Row: 1 2 3 4 5 6", it means Bell 1 rings first, then Bell 2, and so on, for this specific row.
-
Elapsed Time (Bottom Center):
"Elapsed: MM:SS.ss": At the very bottom center of the screen, this clock displays the total time that has passed since the performance began, in minutes, seconds, and hundredths of a second.
-
Bell Offsets (Handled by Software):
The software can automatically account for any differences in bell speaking time. Before performing, you can input (if desired) a delay time which is the average amount of time it takes your bell to ring after you pull the rope. By setting this, you can simply ring the bell when your colour and number appear on the screen, and the software will handle the adjustment for speaking time. This setting can be ignored by all players or by individuals if it isn’t deemed useful.
